About the Coaches: Head Coach-Bob Ruth
Bob grew up in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pa, graduated 7th in his class, attended Univ of NC and Penn State, from which he graduated summa cum laude, and got his masters in Psycholgy from Sonoma State Unviersity, California in 1984.
Bob has coached in one way or another for the last 31 years in Tallahassee, and 5 before that in the north.. He has had two stints of coaching, one from 1977-1982/4 and one from 2002-present. Both the 1977-82 and 2002-present were/are build up situations, growing teams from little or nothing to being competitive on a state wide basis. In 1984, given the chance to work with an established team, he produced a JO champion and national top 16 swimmer. Previously with a smaller team , Bob had another JO champion in the 10 & under 50 breast in 1979.
Between 1984-2002, Bob concentrated on teaching swimming, which ended up including private lessons with multiple National Top 16 age-groupers in senior swimmers as well as many nationally ranked masters swimmers.
Bob's swimming career actually took off as a master's swimmer, when he began to teach himself more. In 1993, he was 5th in the world in the 100 breast (SCM). He was also nationally ranked in 5 other events the same year. In 1997, he formed a masters team and 2 national record setting relays (400 and 800 free relays). Prior to that he swam and lettered at Penn State.
